Chaz Williams Returns to Turkey to Play for Afyon

What do both Adam Sandler and Chaz Williams have in common? They’re both from Brooklyn and they both love Turkey!

Chaz Williams returned to Turkey this week after inking a new deal with Afyonkarahisar Belediye. Hopefully the second time is a charm after breaking ties with his previous Turkish team, Eskisehir Basket, in November. Chaz’s new team is 2-9 on the season, so he has an opportunity to impact the game. In his last stint in Turkey, Chaz was averaging over 10 points per game. The UMBR will keep you updated on his progress throughout the season.

About Afyonkarahisar

The seeming random collection of letters above is actually the name of the city that Mr. Williams will be calling home!. Afyonkarahisar, usually known simply as Afyon,  is a small provincial capital in western Turkey home to about 175,000 people. According to wikipedia, “There is little in the way of bars, cafes, live music or other cultural amenities, and the standards of education are low for a city in the west of Turkey.” Sounds like Amherst! But hey, that means more free time to spend in the gym and bulk up on sucuk, the spicy beef sausage that Afyon is known for.

Hopefully Chaz is a history buff because Afyon has been around since the Hittite Empire!!!! Throughout the years the iconic fortress nestled above the city has seen many conquerors including Alexander the Great, the Byzantines, the Seljuq Turks,  the European Crusaders, and finally the Ottomans. Fun fact:  Afyon  means “Opium” in Turkish because the city was known as the center of Opium production during the Ottoman Empire.

Turkey is the country that brought us Dr. Oz, doner kebabs and the Turkish Twist at Canobie Lake Park. Maybe it can also be the launching point for our lord and savior’s NBA career.

But don’t take it from me, here is Adam Sandler!

  • Slim Phil

Adam showing off his historical research skills as well as his basketball knowledge! Also, do you think we have far-flung readers who don’t know what Canobie Lake Park is?

    • AdamUMBR

Canobie Lake Park isn’t an american landmark?

If it isn’t, there are a lot of unfortunate people out there who have no idea what they’re missing.
