Derek Kellogg picked up a unique player for the 2016 class this week: Unique McLean (see what I did there?). The 6′-1″ McLean is a guard at the MacDuffie School in Granby and reportedly has a 40 inch vertical!
Here is a video of him crushing a dunk contest in high school
Apparently he is loving his time in Western Mass because he turned down offers at other A10 schools, like Dayton, Rhode Island and Fordham (source) to play for UMass. This is a big win for Kellogg as recently local recruits have been choosing to play for Dan Hurley at URI and Archie Miller at Dayton over UMass. Jared Terrell, a Weymouth product who now plays for Rhody and was heavily recruited by UMass comes to mind in the category of missed opportunities.
Here is a snapshot of what the 2016 squad is looking like:
Zack Lewis (G)
Donte Clark (G)
CJ Anderson (G)
LuWane Pipkins (G)
Unique McLean (G)
Zach Coleman (F)
Malik Hines (F)
Seth Berger (F)
Rashaan Holloway (C )
That’s a lot of guards! Obviously there is tons of time to pick up more big guys, but it looks like Derek Kellogg is going to be playing a lot of three and four guard lineups in the next few seasons.
This is not necessarily the worst thing because, as Daniel explained in his recent article, new rule changes seem to favor quick guard play.
